A Happy, Healthy Colon – Acidic or Alkaline? *
Maintaining colon health is essential to a good digestive system!
Friendly bacteria in the digestive system occur mainly in the colon and small intestine – they do no harm and many of them carry out useful functions, including providing protection against potentially harmful bacteria. It is estimated that the actual number of bacterial cells in the digestive system at any one time are about 100 trillion cells!
So what can I do to keep my colon happy and healthy? Balancing Bowel pH is key!
There are two important formulas to help balance bowel pH and healthy bacteria: Zymex and Lactic Acid Yeast. In both cases their function is to acidify the colon by breaking down carbohydrates into lactic acid. This process increases the natural production and balance of “Acid-Dophilus” or “Acid-Loving” (“Dophilus” is Greek for “loving”) bacteria. This is, in my opinion, far better than trying to take an acidophilus supplement and hoping the strain will somehow re-inoculate the gut. There is a long-time controversy familiar to many between Antoine Beauchamp and Louis Pasteur on the concept that the terrain is the real underlying issue and not the microbe.
Zymex: This formula can serve a number of beneficial functions including improved detoxification. In essence, it takes the load off of the liver. This is especially valuable in women who suffer from breast tenderness and swelling. Another key area to be aware of is for those who suffer from acute IBS, Colitis, etc. Use the chewable wafers where possible, as there is a better response to chewing the products. The taste is somewhat sweet and pleasant and many times you will notice quick relief in using this formula. Another beneficial formula for further support in these cases is Okra Pepsin.
An additional beneficial response for Zymez has been sucking on the tablets for bouts of sore throats, including strep throat. It is thought that Zymex has an antibiotic quality not unlike penicillin. Always remember, however, to also follow your physicians’ directions. As a side note, you can also use a clove of garlic in these cases, putting it between back teeth and letting juices seep out slowly, as this too can have antibacterial effects. (Obvious warning is garlic breath!)
Lactic Acid Yeast: This is a mycelium type yeast and perfect for those who consume a lot of carbohydrates, as it will help to acidify an over-alkaline gut, which underlies many digestive disorders. When a gut is too alkaline it can interfere with protein digestion and assimilation of various nutrients like calcium, iron and other minerals.
One of the big indications for this product is a lot of intestinal gas. Gas forming bacteria thrive in an alkaline environment, therefore, acidifying with Lactic Acid Yeast will create an environment where alkaline loving bacteria cannot exist or thrive. In past generations people ate more fermented foods like sauerkraut, borscht, homemade yogurt, etc., which kept the colon favoring acid-loving bacteria. Lactic Acid Yeast is much like a fermented vegetable and can be safely consumed daily. In fact, it is a great way to keep your colon happy and healthy!
