“Too Much of a Good Thing Is Not Good.”

No doubt antibiotics are great, it’s just the misuse and overuse of antibiotics that causes the problem!!

In may’s newsletter we talked about how our immune system is  our number one defense system against all the infectious diseases.  We briefly went over how the majority of people immediately take antibiotics as their first line of defense when they are sick.  This can cause the immune system to weaken and not do its job!  Dr. Howard is concerned about the overuse and misuse of antibiotics.

In today’s world, antibiotics are being over utilized as a “cure ” for any sniffle, cough, or discolored mucus. This is a dangerous trend that creates drug resistant bacteria. Our bodies have bacteria, both good and bad that create very little problems.  In fact, most common conditions (like colds, the flu, most coughs, bronchitis and sore throats) are caused by viruses which are occasionally treated with antibiotics, in spite of their ineffectiveness on viruses.

Over prescribed antibiotics will not only destroy beneficial bacteria in our bodies but weak bacteria, thus, leaving the drug resistant bacteria (super bugs) to reproduce.  Since bacteria is one of the fastest reproducing organisms in existence which enables them to easily mutate their genes to resist antibiotics. Antibiotic resistant “super-bugs” are evolving at an alarming rate, according to a just-published study in the New England Journal of Medicine. Soon, say experts, many infections will be untreatable altogether.

When you come down with the sniffles, don’t just rely on antibiotics. Help your immune system out by strengthening it with proper nutrition, exercise, and optimal nerve function by getting chiropractic adjustments.

Painkillers vs. Chiropractic

Do you suffer from mild to severe pain? Which do you believe is better for you pain killers or chiropractic care? Regardless of the pain’s cause, many turn to pain medication without a blink of an eye.  Did you know that pain medications are not your only relievers?  In fact, they are one of the worst alternatives.  A better option is to seek chiropractic care. Preventive healthcare specialist Dr. Howard educates patients about the potential hazards of medication and offers winning drug-free solutions that address the cause of a patient’s complaint, rather than masking symptoms with medication. Pain medications such as nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).  NSAIDs are marketed as effective pain-blockers gentle enough for everyday use. Although flashy ads everywhere forget to mention that over 76,000 people each year are hospitalized due to adverse reaction to these drugs.

Pain medication does not fix a problem. Yes, it does provide relief, but only short-term relief.   As soon as your pain pills wear off, the pain is likely to return.  Due to the short term relief, people start taking a higher dosage of the medication then what is prescribed. In result to this trend a shocking number of Americans are overusing and misusing pain medication, many without thinking about the side effects. Both over the counter and prescription pain killers are full of side effects. Even the smallest side effects can negatively affect our bodies and lives. Some side effects are dizziness, skin rash, nausea, heartburn, abdominal cramps, bloating, indigestion, constipation, rectal bleeding, headache, high blood pressure, gas, diarrhea, nervousness, irritability, vomiting and stomachache.

Dr. Howard encourages patients to familiarize themselves with this alarming information and to share this with loved ones who rely on pain medication for relief. Unfortunately, the safety of pain medication is misinformed by health-care professionals who themselves are misinformed about possible risks. This widespread confusion is due, in part, to the sources that health-care providers rely on for drug information.

Do you still think pain medication is harmless? Think again. Pain relief should improve your life, not create a whole new set of problems. By turning to chiropractic care, they will treat the pain by going directly to the source. Chiropractic care is all natural, it doesn’t involve medication or invasive medical procedures, it’s safe for everyone. It involves manual therapy that leads to long-term relief. For example, a patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can get less pain and improved movement with finger joint adjustments.

Your chiropractor may perform a neck adjustment, have you comeback for a follow-up appointment, and return again to show you helpful at-home techniques to reduce pain.  After that, you may be done.  Three appointments with a chiropractor, even if you pay out-of-pocket, are cheaper than years worth of pain pills. In short, chiropractic care is not only safer, but cheaper, less invasive, and long-lasting.  So, the next time you find yourself reaching for pain relievers to treat you pain and discomfort, please stop.  Make an appointment with your chiropractor.
